Aetiology/risk factors:

A

There is a genetic component.

Caused by energy input > energy output

Monogenic causes = leptin deficiency and Prader Willi

A

24% of men are obese

25% of women are obese

A

Noticing you’re fat

Routine health check

Symptoms of complications e.g. diabetes, coronary artery disease and obstructive sleep apnoea

high body weight

High BMI

High waist circumference

Investigations:

A

Measure serum lipids

Measure HbA1c

Hormone profile (may be a hormonal cause of obesity)

TFT’s - hypothyroidism can cause obesity

Other investigations depend on co-morbidities
