Religion Semester One Final Flashcards

1
Q

Creation

A

We are all called to praise God
Creation is evidence of the power of God
Creation was made by the three persons of the trinity (holy spirit, son, father)
An example that we should not only believe the things we see but also things (such as creation) that we didn’t see happen
Well, the creation stories are figurative, we read them for the message and not the literal interpretation
Earthy realm vs heavenly realm
Humans (both genders) are created in God’s image and our soul ties us to God. We must serve and love God
God is love and all God created is good
Review both creation stories and stuff

Q

Original Sin/The Fall

A

Adam and Eve realize they are naked after eating the forbidden fruit. This symbolizes guilt and shame. They are also ashamed for God to see them. Then they blame each other (this symbolizes that they lost their original holiness and justice). This story shows that only God knows true good from evil and we are not God. Consequences : original sin, women have to give birth to children, people have to do labor in order to survive, loss of original holiness and justice

Jesus Christ is perfect holiness. He is a role model for us and how to be holy

Humanity alone cannot overcome satan but w/ God jesus can.
Jesus resisted temptations against satan in the deserts. God wins through Jeusus passion, death, and resurrection. Now we have salvation if we choose it.

A

Jerusalem was the center of the Jewish faith

  • crowds welcomed him as a king (leaders wanted to kill him starting around this time)
  • he went to the temple and people were selling things and using it as a marketplace. He told them how awful this was and turned over their tables. This is when more people really start to want to kill him Gospels of Mark and luke say that this was when people started wanting to kill him

Jesus’ death

A

Friday

  • Jesus had been on the cross for about 6 hours before he died (or less) because he had already lost so much blood from the scourging
  • eclipse, earthquake , curtain temple splits (see other slide for more about this)
  • body placed in a tomb guarded by soldiers
17
Q

Curtain in temple splits

A

Only high priests were allowed to go behind the curtain. The split symbolizes how ALL people can have a relationship with God.

18
Q

how gospel accounts are different for the resurrection

A

Each gospel account is a bit different but they all say that Jesus is no longer in the tomb and the angels tell women that Jesus is alice. Esus then reveals himself to Mary Magdalene (in Matthew the other mary is there as well) and then later reveals himself to disciples.

19
Q

Evidence for the resurrection

A

Many writings about the resurrection
Early christians knew Jesus rose from the dead (which makes it less likely to have been made up)
Jesus’ body was not taken by disciples because many of them died in their belief in him
Jesus appeared to over 500 followers

20
Q

Truths that the resurrection brings us

A

Christ’s resurrection guarantees our resurrection
Jesus is the son of God
All Jesus’ teachings are true
Resurrection opens the way to new life (eternal life)

21
Q

Ascension

A

Jesus stayed on earth for 40 days after his resurrection.
Taught disciples how to understand his life, death. And resurrection through scripture.
Told disciples to go and spread the good news.
Ascension gets written about in the bible but it is impossible for us to comprehend what it was like
Jesus open doors into the heavens for us

22
Q

Christ’s descent into Hell

A

Jesus’ death was like a human death (full experience)
Jesus descended into Hell to free the souls who died before him
Righteous go to heaven
Unrighteous go to hell
hell= absence of God
Christ now power over earth, Heaven and Hell

23
Q

Righteous-

A

to be sinless without fault

24
Q

Significance of the ascension

A

Reveals christs glory
Ascension ( son of God comes from heaven to earth) and incarnation (son of God leaves earth to go to Heaven) are symmetric
Jesus has authority over Heaven, Hell, and Earth
We have the chance to spend all eternity w/ God in Heaven
Jesus can be closer to us now that he has left earth
When Jesus was on earth he had more limits because he was in human form. Now we can be closer to him because there aren’t limits on his side.

25
Q

Holiness

A

To be set apart for God’s service, to live a morally good life. To be a person of prayer, and to reveal God’s love to the world through acts of loving service.

26
Q

3 of the dimensions of holiness

A

Revealing God’s love and shares in God’s own life.
Ex: all creation is holy because we are all unique and created in God’s image. We spread God’s word in our own unique ways.
Has been consecrated to God. We are holy because we have been consecrated to God through baptism
When something is “clean”. We must have clean hearts and consciences.

27
Q

aids to holiness

A

Aids to holiness
We do not need to be perfect at everything, but we must learn how to say no to bad things even when others are succumbing to them
God provides us with gifts to guide us to holiness. Some of these are:
Intellect and free will
Intellect helps us see the natural order God has created. Helps us make good moral choices
Free will - helps us act on the good choices sometimes even when we are under pressure
Grace -
God’s loving presence in our lives that helps us respond to him and His call and live as Hid sons and daughters. Restores our original justice, original holiness and our living communion with the holy trinity ( was lost through sin). —> so then God is our Father and Jesus our Brother and Holy Spirit lives within us.
