Open vs Closed circulatory system

A

Open:Blood is not entirely contained in the blood vessels. Blood is pumped by a tubular heart into blood vessels and spongy chambers called sinuses.
Closed: Blood remains within blood vessels, nutrients, waste and O2 move in and out through the thin walls of the smallest blood vessels. More efficient circulation.

Plasma

A

55% of blood is plasma and 90% of plasma is water
Helps regulate body temp. The remaining 10% is protein, nutrients and wastes such as CO2. Plasma proteins transport fatty acids and vitamins and fight infections.

RBC

A

45% of blood is mostly RBC. RBC carries O2 from lungs to all the tissues of the body. 1mm cubed contains about 5 million RBCs. Every RBC contains about 250 million molecules of hemoglobin. Once O2 s gone, Rbc carries CO2 to the lungs.

What is the advantage of the shape of RBC?

A

It’s inward curve in the middle, caused by the loss of the nuclei and mitochondria, increases the SA. Also gives flexibility to pass through blood vessels of differnet shapes and sizes.

Life of RBC?

A

Lifespan: 100-120 days

Is broken down and the iron from the old blood cell is returned to bone marrow to produce new RBC.

A
