what are the 3 types of oral mucosa?
lining, masticatory, gustatory
describe masticatory mucosa
subjected to friction and compression, parakeratinised, thick lamina propria
describe lining mucosa
mobile and distensible, nonkeratinized, loose lamina propria, wide submucosa, rapid turnover
describe gustatory mucosa
similar to masticatory, keratinised, only on dorsum of tongue, characterised by papillae- some have taste buds
what are the layers in mucosa?
epithelium, lamina propria, CT, submucosa, bone
what are the layers in epithelium?
stratum corneum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum germinativum
what are the stages of keratin formation?
tonofilaments, membrane-coated granules, keratohyalin granules, keratin
what are non-keratinocytes?
cells that do not contain keratin- melanocytes, merkel cells, Langerhans cells
what are melanocytes?
pigment producing, found in stratum germinativum
what are merkel cells?
associated with mechanoreceptor neurons, in stratum germinativum
what are Langerhans cells?
dendritic cells, found about stratum germinativum, antigen-presenting
what are the 3 types of papillae in gustatory mucosa?
filiform, fungiform, (circum)vallate
name some diseases of the oral mucosa
oral infections, recurrent oral ulceration, vesiculo-bullous lesions, white patches, premalignant conditions, pigmented lesions, oral cancer
describe geographical tongue
irregular, smooth patches, no filiform papillae, asymptomatic, no tx needed
