Why would the increase of the price of bread matter during the French Revolution

A

The families only had enough money for the bare essentials, rent , clothing , heating and taxes They only had about 13 sous a day left for bread. The french relied on bread , they needed a loaf a day to survive. meat was a treat in good times.

The effects of a bad harvest

A
  • shortage of bread
  • the price of bread shoots up
  • if the price of bread goes up they cant spend money on manufactured goods clothes, shoes and candles
  • Factories cannot sell their goods
    Factories have to reduce wages or lay workers off
    This will make it impossible for many peasants and workers to feed themselves

what were the Reveillon riots

A

these were the riots lead by the peasants , poorest labourers after the price of bread rose to 15 sous. This was because it was impossible for them to survive.
the price of bread rose due to bad weather , therefore bad harvest

A

Many people blamed the Queen for spending to much money on things like diamonds , she was rumoured to have many lovers and interfered on the running of the country

A

This meant there were food shortages and people starving
Bread was in short supply that the poor rioted in Paris demanding to be fed. They felt the king had taken many taxes and should provide for them in return

A

The third estate were angry with the king , the first and second estate did not have to pay taxes whilst they did.
the members of the third estate , such as lawyers and merchants were unhappy because although they were quite wealthy they did not have the power or say over how France was run

what was the Tennis court oath

A

the third estate met with the king demanding a new constitution was set up. they felt it needed to be set up to deal with the economic crisis
Louis legalized the national assembly but then surrounded its troops around Versaille and got rid of Jacques Necker. in response the perisians stormed into Bastille , a state prison where they believed ammunition was stored and the French Revolution began

Why was Louis XVI broke

A

he had spent all of France’s money and he had borrowed money that he couldnt pay back
he even tried to raise taxes to increase his income
he spent his money on his property, entertaining, gambling, clothes and jewellary
the French peasants were angry when they saw what he spent his money on

A

people thought she had an affair and many of her children were not fathered by Louis
She spent much of her money on clothes and gambling whilst ordinary people were so poor

in the 1780s all groups of people were divided into 3 groups except King Louis and Maria Antoinette

A

1st estate - the clergy 2% of the population had 10% of the land - did not pay taxes

2nd estate - The Nobilty 1% of the population had 25% of the land did not pay taxes

3rd estate everyone else - 97% of the population paid taxes had no power

A

these were a list of grievances written by each Estate to the king in the 1780s
they each outlined how most people in that estate felt , what they were worried about and what they hoped would happen

A

it was a famous prison , used to house political
, people who criticised the king or the government
to become a prisoner the king had to write a letter for your arrest
some part of the fortress was used to hold armoury for the kings army
the Bastille was attacked on the morning of the 14th
July 1789, which started the French Revolution

A

When word spread about the storming of Bastille thousands of people marched to Paris and took control of the city
A NATIONAL Assembly was set up to govern France more fairly
The Royal family were taken prisoner as well as many members of the 2nd estate Louis and Marie Antoinete were executed

why was the meeting held

A

because the king made a tax in which all the estates had to pay a tax
the 1st and 2nd estate did not pay the tax, This led to riots all around France The king held a meeting with Parliament to try and resolve the problem At the meeting the third estate are outnumbered by the but 1st and 2nd estate The king locks the 3rd estate out of the meeting hall.
The 3rd estate are fed up of being ignored and decide to hold their own meeting in a tennis court they decide to work together until France is a fairer place

It began after King Louis failed to raise taxes to help the countries financial situation he held a meeting after the 1st and 2nd estate refused to pay the tax This turned into a protest about the conditions in France the 3rd estate were angry that they were not being listened to even though they were paying taxes they were the poorest and could not survive
