Q

Explain the development and impact of the Atlantic slave trade on west Africa and the Americas.

A

Many Africans were brutalized and taken from their homeland. There were also many diseases carried on the slave ships. Some Africans would jump off the ships to avoid being taken. About 2,000 Africans were sent to the Americas each year during the 1500s. In the 1780s, it was 80,000 a year. By the 1800s when oversees slave trade finally ended, an estimated 11 million enslaved Africans had been taken to the Americas. And an estimated 2 million died under the brutal conditions of the middle passage.

For the Americans, the slave trade brought great profits to many and provided the labor needed for colonial economies.
