Q

What happens to atoms during chemical changes?

A

Atoms are rearranged to make new substances with different properties, but no atoms are destroyed nor created.

Q

What are the three types of atom models used by scientists?

A

Bohr model: shows # of electrons in rings around nucleus
Space-filling: shows solid spheres and how atoms connect together
Electron cloud: shows general locations of electrons, but not the #

Q

What is meant by the energy levels around the nucleus?

A

These are the rings around the nucleus which hold a specific number of electrons in each (see p. 185). Remember, think of it like small roads encircling the nucleus that electrons travel on.

Q

What is the maximum number of electrons that can be in the first and second rings that the Bohr models show?

Q

What are valence electrons?

A

These are electrons found in the outermost energy level of an atom

Q

When looking at the periodic table, how can the atomic number of an atom tell us how many electrons each element contains?

A

The atomic number tells the number of protons in each atom. In a stable atom, the number of protons and electrons are equal. (The same number)

Q

When looking at the periodic table, What can you learn about the elements in the same group or vertical column (column #1-2, and 13-18)?

A

The number of valence electrons are the same.

Q

In the periodic table, elements in group 18 have full outermost energy levels. What does this tell you about how they react with other elements?

A

They are unreactive and don’t tend to form bonds.
