Cerebral Cortex Flashcards

1
Q

What is the purpose of association cortices?

A
  • They are for cognition
  • They connect different sensory and motor inputs with one another to accomplish actions like attending, identifying, recognizing relationships, planning

Q

Describe the cellular and structural organization of the neocortex.

A
  • Neocortex = newer cortices, evolutionarily speaking
  • Organized both horziontally and vertically with interneurons that coordinate cross talk between neurons in the same layer and between layers
  • Have different types of cells depending on layer of cortex
  • Myelination varies depending on layer

Q

What is the insula cortex?

What is the cingulate cortex?

What do these have in common?

A

Important for pain perception and social emotions

Important for error detection and correction

Both are hidden cortices
