How would you define non-trauma/ illness?
A state in which a function or part of the body is no longer in a healthy condition and which is experienced by the patient. Can be due to lifestyle, ageing, genetics or infection

How would you define injury / trauma?
Damage to the body produced by recent exposure to: mechanical, thermal, electrical or chemical energy.
BTEC/MTEC
When would you use the other symptoms pathway?
When there is not a symptom specific pathway relevant for the call
When would you use the ‘follow a particular course of action’ pathway?
When the caller has:
A known health problem diagnosed by a HCP
A firm plan that’s been put in place by HCP
Current symptoms that relate to this health problem
Define a serious illness/ pain
When the person is so ill that they can’t think about or do anything else
What is the purpose of the NHS pathways?
IT IS NOT TO DIAGNOSE
Once we hit a point of not being able to rule out, the assessment finishes and the patient is referred to the correct level of care where further assessment/ diagnosis or treatment can be given
What is shock
A life threatening condition where the cardiovascular system fails for some reason and insufficient oxygen is pumped to vital organs
What is the purpose of triage not possible
The caller is impossible to communicate with. They keep repeating themselves and there isn’t anything else we can do
What’s the purpose of transfer to a clinician
When communication is difficult but not impossible. Clinician may be able to prove for more information
What are the 4 different clinician dispositions?
Speak to a clinician from our service immediately
Speak to a clinician from our service within 30 minutes
Speak to a clinician from our service within 2 hours
Speak to a clinician from our service for home management advice
What is a complex call?
A call which isn’t straightforward and the call handler is working at or beyond they knowledge and/or experience
What are the two factors that establish an injury?
HOW
WHEN
has there been trauma?
Was it in the last 7 days?
What is care advice
Advice given to the person in order to manager their symptoms until they receive treatment
