What causes PID?
Ascending infection
- Most commonly chlamydia and gonorrhoea
What else can cause PID apart from STI?
Normal flora
- Mycoplasma hominis
- Mycoplasma genitalum

Young single sexually active women
Symptoms?
Lower abdo pain
Dysmenorrhoea
Dyspareunia
Investigation?
Triple swab
- NAAT
Bloods
TVUS
What bloods should be done?
FBC
CRP
Culture
Why would a TVUS be done?
In suspected abscess
When should treatment start
BEFORE SWAB RESULTS
What should be given?
Ceftriaxone IM
+
Doxycycline
+
Metronidazole
What is a dangerous complication?
Sepsis
How should treatment change if they’re septic?
Should be IV
Follow up?
Reviewed 72 hours post presentation
What treatment should be done in patients with an IUD?
Consider removal of IUD
