Adverbial of emphasis
A modifier of verbs, generally a single word, that shifts emphasis to a particular structure
Antecedent
Noun or nominal for which a pronoun stands
Antithesis
Juxtaposition of contrasting ideas
Broad Reference
Pronoun that refers to a complete sentence rather than to a specific noun or nominal
Cleft Sentence
Shifts the original verb phrase into subject position
Conjunctive Adverb
Conjunctive that connects two independent clauses with an adverbial emphasis
Correlative Conjunction
Two-part conjunction that expresses a relationship between the coordinated structures
Demonstrative Pronouns
Pronouns this and that, which function as nominal substitutes and determiners
Determiner
One of the structure-class words, a signaler of nouns
End Focus
Common rhythm pattern in which the prominent peak of stress lands on or near the final sentence unit
Existential There
Use of there to signal the existence of something, often the signal of new information
Intonation
Rhythmic pattern of a spoken sentence, affected by its stress and pitch and pauses
It-Cleft
Enables the writer to shift the emphasis to any unit in the sentence, forcing the reader to focus on the structure following “it was”
Known-New Contract
Common feature of sentences in which old information will appear in the subject position, with additional information in the predicate
Lexical Cohesion
Continuity of text created by the use of related words, including pronouns, and the repetition of key words
