Q

When layers of metal ions slide over one another are bonds broken?

A

No as the declocalised electrons are free to move

Q

Why do some substance conduct electricity?

A
  • A substance can conduct electricity if it has charged particles that are free to move
  • Metals conduct electricity because their delocalised electrons are far to move through the lattice

Q

Why can ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten or in solution, but not when they are in the solid state?

A

Because when molten or in solution the charged particles are free to move allowing them to conduct electricity, but in solid state they are in fixed positions so they cannot conduct electricity
