Electromagnetic principles Flashcards

1
Q

What direction does magnetic flux flow?

A

Depends on the direction of current.

Current moving towards the observer = anticlockwise

Current moving away from the observer = clockwise

Q

What is the Right Hand Rule in regards to magnetism?

A

An easy way to determine the direction of the magnetic field for conductors.

  • Grasp the conductor in your right hand
  • Your thumb points in the direction of the current in the conductor
  • Your fingers point in the direction of the magnetic field surrounding the conductor

Q

What happens to the magnetic field with adjacent conductors?

A

Depends on the direction of current.

Current moving same direction = magnetic field flows around both conductors.

Current moving different directions = magnetic field flows around seperate conductors

Q

What is a solenoid?

A

A solenoid is created when several turns of insulated conductor are wound around a ‘former’ into a coil.

Q

What is Magnotmotive force?

A

Magnetisng force (magneting pressure) that causes magnetic flux to flow out of the North pole to South Pole.

Q

What is the formula for Magnetomotive Force?

A

Fm = IN

Fm = Magnetomotive Force

I = Current

N = Number of turns in the coil
