how does typhoid present?

A

sustained fever, anorexia, malaise, vague abdominal discomfort, constipation or diarrhea, dry cough.

what can be seen on examination of a patient with TF?

A

Pulse-temperature dissociation, hepatosplenomegaly, Rose spots (30-50% of patients, but may disappear before presentation)

how is typhoid diagnosed?

A

isolation of the organism in cultures of blood (80% if 2 cultures taken), stool, urine, bone marrow, and duodenal aspirates.

how is typhoid treated?

A

IV Ceftriaxone 2g OD (empirical)

Once sensitivities known, can switch to PO Ciprofloxacin 500mg BD, or PO Azithromycin 500mg OD.
