9. Vertebrate Gastrulation I Flashcards
(34 cards)
What is gastrulation according to Lewis Wolpert?
The most important event in your life
Gastrulation is crucial for the development of multicellular organisms.
What is the strict definition of gastrulation?
Formation of the gut through internalization of epithelial sheet
What is the broader definition of gastrulation?
Process leading to formation of three germ layers
What does the ectoderm give rise to?
Skin, sense organs, nervous system
What structures are formed from the mesoderm?
Skeleton, circulatory system, muscles, excretory system, most of reproductive system
What does the endoderm develop into?
Digestive and respiratory tracts and associated structures
What is invagination in gastrulation?
Inward movement/in-pocketing of epithelial sheet
What drives invagination?
Apical constriction (contraction of apical actin-myosin meshwork)
What is involution?
Collective cell migration led by ‘leader cells’ creating a second epithelial sheet inside embryo
What is delamination?
Duplication of epithelial sheet to create another layer
What is ingression?
Cells lose epithelial phenotype and become invasive
What transition is involved in ingression?
Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)
What is epiboly?
Spreading movement to cover embryo
What drives epiboly?
Cell division, intercalation, changes in cell size/shape
What happens during initial polarity and axis formation in frog gastrulation?
Egg has animal-vegetal polarity; sperm entry triggers cortical rotation
What is the ‘grey crescent’?
Future dorsal lip of blastopore formed after cortical rotation
What is the blastula stage?
Stage with multiple cell divisions creating a fluid-filled cavity (blastocoel)
What defines the animal and vegetal poles in the blastula?
Animal pole has smaller cells; vegetal pole has larger cells due to yolk content
What initiates early gastrulation in frogs?
Begins at dorsal lip of blastopore with bottle cells undergoing apical constriction
What occurs during mid gastrulation?
Involution continues; cells migrate under blastocoel roof
What is formed during late gastrulation?
Three germ layers fully formed; notochord forms in dorsal mesoderm
When does human gastrulation occur?
During the second week of gestation
What structures are involved in human gastrulation?
Epiblast and hypoblast
What forms the primitive streak in human gastrulation?
Equivalent to dorsal lip in frog
