Q

What are some of the differences in different kinds of vertebrae (cervical/thoracic/lumbar)

A
  • Cervical
    • Thin lamina
    • Transverse foramen
    • No transverse processes
    • Bifid spinous process
    • Foramen for vertebral artery
  • Thoracic
    • Oblique transverse process
    • Facets more aligned in the coronal plane to allow lateral rotation
  • Lumbar
    • Horizontal transverse processes
    • Narrow spinal cord
    • Facets more aligned in sagittal plane to allow flexion/extension

Q

How do you know if a vertebrae is thoracic?

A

You know vertebra is thoracic if rib is attached:

  • Rib emerges from disc space, also articulating with tip of transverse process
  • Rib comes of above vertebra
