1. commensal organism in the vagina/rectum
2. causes chroioamniocentesis / endometritis in the mother ( fever, abdo pain and foul discharge)
3. Tx - IV penicillin throughout labour if GBS positive swab/pyrexia during labour
   - labour onset < 37 weeks
