Q

describe what is meant by resolution of acute inflammation, and when would it occur

A

= restoration to normal function

occurs when; good blood supply, site has ability to renew(eg GI tract), source of injury is easily removed

Q

what is supparation

A

= formation of pus, = a collection of fluid containing mix of inflammatory cells, bacteria or inflammatory products

Q

when would organisation be a result of acute inflammation (4)

A

when there is; poor blood supply, extensive cell death + necrosis, a lot of fibrin been produced, tissue type has limited regenerative capacity

Q

what happens when organisation occurs in form of facilitation of healing

A

formation of granulation tissue, formation of capillaries, delivery of myofibroblasts to lay down collagen + smooth muscle, and build scaffolding for healing

Q

what happens when organisation occurs in form of fibrosis and scarring

A

= loss of function

neutrophils then macrophages then fibroblasts lay down collagen = scar tissue

Q

what circumstances is chronic inflammation more likely to occur (4)

A

suppuration has produced walled off areas of pus, = abscess or empyema
infection is caused by virus or is persistent(eg TB)
injury is persistent, foreign body unable to be removed
aetiology is autoimmune

Q

briefly describe what granulomas produced by chronic inflammation are and give an example of a disease

A

= aggregate of epitheliod histiocytes or organised collection of macrophages
formed when immune system cannot eliminate perceived foreign material(ie parisitic infection)
example = sarcoidosis
