What replacement infant formulas are available if a child has a milk allergy?

A
  • Extensive Hydrolysed formula - chemically heated breakdown of proteins (~5% protein remains - some may still be symptomatic → move onto amino acid formula)
  • Amino acid formula - derived from plants, no milk origin. More expensive
  • Soya from >6 months on

What is lactose intolerance?

A

Lack of lactase persistance allele

  • Symptoms: bloating, flatulence, explosive diarrhoea
  • Often subtle and preogressive over years
  • Mostly diagnosed as adolescent/ adult
  • Not always symptomatic with milk
