Bonds Flashcards
Ionic Bonding
Strong electorate attraction between positive and negative ions
Covalent bonds
Electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of bonded atoms
Metallic Bond
Strong electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons
Delocalised Electrons
Electrons from outer shell of metal atom, but not fixed to a particular atom so can move freely throughout structure
Melting points decrease
Atom gets larger
Has more electrons and more electron shells. Means more shielding between nucleus and delocalised electrons
Electrostatic forcé between them weakens
Melting points increase in groups
G1 has lower than G2 as G2 has more delocalised electrons
G2 has 2 while G1 has 1
