Is there a structural limit to how much power one can obtain?

A

Yes.

  1. Melanesian ‘big-man’ is limited by factional weaknesses and is dependent on his people. Therefore, political and economic advance is contained for that would risk rebellion (Sahlins 1963).
  2. Polynesian governance more stable because systematic org of power allows for redistribution of wealth towards maintaining relations of power to subjects. Inc organisational power leads to inc power in personal decision making of chief for responsibility is broadened (Sahlins 1963).
  3. I-R system structurally promotes egalitarianism. Relies on zero dependence and therefore politically and economically raised ruler is a taboo. (Woodburn 1982)

How is systemic power maintained?

A
  1. Political and economic superiority/monopolisation of rulers
    e. g. Chowdris’ monopoly over state institutions (Martin 2009)
  2. Ideology of patronage
    e. g Chowdris’ reinforced protective role with reference to their high moral and social status of Muslims. (Martin 2009)
