What are enzymes in the digestive system produced by?
They are produced by specialised cells in glands and in the gut lining.
What do the salivary glands do?
They produce amylase enzyme in the saliva.
What is another name for the gullet?
Oesophagus.
What does the liver do?
Produces bile - bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats.
What does the stomach do?
1) It pummels the food with its muscular walls
2) It produces the protease enzyme, pepsin
3) It produces hydrochloric acid for two reasons -
To kill bacteria
To give the right pH for the protease enzyme to work pH 2
What does the gall bladder do?
It is where bile is stored before it is released into the small intestine.
What does the pancreas do?
It produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes. It releases them into the small intestine.
What does the large intestine do?
It is where excess water is absorbed from the food.
What does the small intestine do?
Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes to complete digestion.
It is also where the digestive food is absorbed out of the digestive system and into the blood.
What does the rectum do?
It is where the faeces (indigestible food) are stored before going through the anus.
