The methods society may use to control the members of that society, often for the good of the many.
Serves to limit the freedom of the individual, makes individual behaviour fit in with the norms of society

Psychology can be used to change behaviour, useful when helping those w problems, but can be manipulated to control others.
BPS says psychology used to ‘enhance application of Psychology for the greater public good’

Examples for Y1 Topics in Social Control

A

Social - Agency used to enhance authority like wearing uniforms. SIT used to change political views ( i=f(SIN) )

Biological - Dabs & Hargrove testosterone maybe suggests drugs to lower levels of aggression

Cognitive - Unreliability of recall e.g. Bartlett affects court decisions. Who can testify and under what conditions

Learning - Classical used to change behaviour e.g. Aversion Therapy to ‘cure’ homosexuality
