  • There was a mixture of athletics and traditional country sports including, football,cricket,running and hurdles.
  • Rules were written and they drew athletes from all over the country in the early games there were also fun events blindfolded wheelbarrow race and an ‘old woman’s race with a pound of tea for the winner.

  • Pageantry and celebrations were important (for example a band led marches flag bearers and Olympic hymns where sung, a crown of laurel leaves was placed on the head of the winner).
  • In 1850 wenlock agricultural reading society (WARS) resolved to form a class called the Olympian class which was set up to promote moral,physical and intellectual improvement, especially in the lower class people of wenlock
