excellent example of Expressionist qualities: angst & discomfort as experienced by artist, he was agoraphobic; reaction to Industrial Revolution and urbanization
bourgeois client pretends not to notice prostitutes= duplicity of modern life
angular perspective, stacked figures, little negative space, like Caillebotte but dehumanized, threatening, acid colors, sharp brushwork, lacks realism
