Nutrients Flashcards

Q

Nutrients in Water

A

All aquatic plants need nutrients.
These nutrients originally come from the land but also from detritus( decaying or dead bodies of plants or animals)
climate affects the nutrient abundance
Nutrients can be replaced through the mixing of water from currents, winds and waves
The bottom of the body of water is full of nutrients

Q

Temperature Mixing

A

When air temp decreases then water temp does too.
This causes the density of the surface level to increase, so the surface water mixes with the deeper water and nutrients are brought to the surface. This results in more phytoplankton.
- Cold water holds dissolved gases better
- When the thermocline break the surface water has more oxygen

Q

How does salt leave the ocean.

A

Salts and other minerals in the ocean leave multiple ways

  • leave through salt spray by waves into the atmosphere
  • dissolved mineral react with suspended material in the water and sink down as sediment
  • removed by organism that use silica or calcium to make shells and bones

Q

How do the nutrients enter the water

A

Nutrient is good by too many nutrients is bad.
Excess nutrients enter the water through human waste
Run off collects fertilizer, which is full of nutrients and things like detergents cause over nutrenitation

Q

Effect of nutrient pollution

A

Too many nutrients lead to an increase in Algae called algal bloom
the algae then dies and decomposers decompose it.
When they do they strip away all the oxygen from the ecosystem.
Leaving none for the rest of the place, they then die.
