What did Wilkinson say?

A

Among the developed countries it is not the richest societies which have the best health but those which have the smallest income differences between rich and poor

Q

What are three things should we consider to re-orientate looking at indigenous Australians as having deficits instead of looking at their strengths?

A

Capacity building: providing the opportunities and space for IA to participate and contribute to the development and management of health programs and services that will actually directly affect them. By building capacity we are empowering IA and allowing them to have control over their lives

Resilience: ability to bounce back from adverse situations - not something they will have or not have, we can reduce adverse situations for them that cause distress instead of looking at how well they have to cope or be resilient

Cultural vitality: health professionals need to consider the dynamic process of culture in relation to their clients - instead of just focusing on the damage of colonisation or current problems, should consider all of their ways and strengths to adapt
