Pharmacology Flashcards
How do benzodiazepines work?
enhance GABA-A action by binding allosterically so increase in inhibitory response by allowing more Cl- in so less neuron firing
How long are benzodiazepines used for?
2-4 weeks
What are examples of benzodiazepines?
lorazepam
diazepam
chlordiazepoxide
What do benzodiazepines cause physically?
- reduce anxiety and aggression in the short term
- sedation
- muscle relaxation
- anticonvulsant
- cause anterograde amnesia
What things can occur with benzodiazepines?
tolerance
dependence
withdrawal
How do SSRIs and SNRIs work?
increase serotonin by blocking the serotonin transporter so less goes back into the presynaptic neuron and more will be left in the cleft
How does pregabalin work?
Ca2+ channel blocker with a GABA enhancer
What circuit does fear come from?
amygdala-cantered circuit
What circuit do anxiety, apprehension and obsessions come from?
CSTC circuit
