A
separation of costocartilage where it attaches to rib or sternum

Sx and Sy of Costochondral Separation
A
hearing or feeling a “pop” at injury site
- Sharp localized pain and deformity.

Costochondral separation management
A
- 3-4 weeks rest
- anti-inflammatory medication
- steroid injection
- rib bracing
- sub max aerobic exs

Rib fractures MOI
A
direct blow or compression to chest.
- usually 1-2 ribs are fracture at a time
- flail chest = 3-4 ribs broken
- most fractures are non displaced

Rib Fractures
A
- 5-9 most commonly fractured
- upper 4 ribs rarely fractured

Sx & Sy of rib fractures
A
- local pain and swelling
- increase pain with inspiration
- shallow breathing
- painful spring and compression test
- Sidebends toward fractured side
- Increased pain w/ sidebend and rotation

Manage rib fractures
A
- R/O other complications
- brace and go to hospital
- Flail = activate EMS

A
- out for the season

- out 4 - 8 weeks

A
- inflammation of costochondral at ribs 2-4

- local inflammation
- raised area
- increased symptoms with cough

A
- rest
- MHP

- bodies rotate towards convex
