Heptadic artery and portal vein
What does the hepatic artery do?
Supplies oxygenated blood to the liver
What does the hepatic portal vein do?
channel blood from the gastrointestinal tract and spleen to the capillary beds in the liver.
Where is the hepatic portal vein located and what is it formed by?
located in abdominal cavity
Formed by the union of the superior mesenteric and splenic veins
What does the hepatic portal connect?
The capillaries of the GI tract with capillaries in the liver
What are the blood vessels subdivide into?
Capillaries that then lead to a lobule
How much blood does the hepatic portal supply the liver?
75% of blood
Describe nutrient rich blood leaving the GI tract
Leaves the GI tract then brought to the liver for processing then sent to the heart
What does the liver do to the blood when it enters
removes vitamins and cofactors from the blood for storage
as filters any toxins that may have been absorbed along with the food.
What happens to the stored substances when needed?
the liver releases them back into circulation through the hepatic veins.
What is a portal system?
Enables blood from set of capillary beds to drain into another set of capillary beds without first returning to the heart
Where does the blood in the liver empty into?
Central vein of each lobule
What does the central veins merge into?
Hepatic vein, collects the blood leaving the liver and bring it to the heart
