Orbitals Flashcards

1
Q

orbitals

A

areas in space around the nucleus in which electrons can be found

they can only exist in specific set of energy levels

Q

Electrons transitioning between energy states

A

electrons can move energy states by absorbing energy to enter a more excited state or emitting energy to return back to the ground state or jump to a lower energy state

electrons always have to return back to the ground state

Q

Bohr Model of the Atom

A
  • electrons move around the nucleus in fixed circular orbits
  • electrons that orbit further from the nucleus have higher energy
  • energy is absorbed when moving from low –> high orbit
  • energy is emitted when moving from high –> low orbit

Q

Which atoms will show color in a solution?

A

metals with unfulfilled d orbitals can produce color because it is the only orbital that can split into 2 different energy levels

allows some electrons to jump up to a higher energy level and transmit visible light?
