Q

What was the meaning of separate spheres in relation to feminism?

A

That women had their ‘feminine sphere’: they were inferior and upper-class women were responsible for housework, while lower-class women were responsible for working in factories. By the 19th century, many women also viewed contributions to society and charity as part of their spheres of influence, and eventually temperance too.
