Q

where will the image of what you are focusing on fall?

A

the fovea

| everything else will fall in the periphery of the retina

Q

where is the optic chiasm found?

A

inferior surface of brain and the optic nerves coming back from eyes meet at the structure named the optic chiasm. the optic chiasm sits just superior to the pituatory fossa

16
Q

where is the primary visual cortex located?

A

in area number 17 of the occipital lobe - the primary visual cortex

17
Q

whta happens at the optic chiasm?

A

at the optic chiasm, nasal fibres cross while temporal fibres do not.
this means that the fibres of one side are perceiving the visual field of the opposite side.

18
Q

what damage do you expect when different parts of the visual pathway are damaged?

A
 • right optic nerve damaged = blindness in one eye
 • optic chiasma disrupted in the middle = bitemporal hemianopia (half blindness in outer parts of each eye)
 • right optic tract damaged = contralateral homonymous hemianopia (blindness in left sides of eye)
 • optic radiation damaged = contralateral homonymous hemianopia
