Criminal Research Methods Flashcards

1
Q

Lab study Eval. 2v2

A

Pros

  • Tight control over extraneous and independent variables means cause & effect can be established
  • Easier to replicate due to standardised procedure

Cons

  • Low ecological validity as artificial setting may produce unnatural behaviour that doesn’t occur in real life
  • Risk of demand characteristics or Experimenter effects (the influence the researcher has on ppt. behaviour

Q

Field Study Eval. 2v1

A

Pros

  • More likely to reflect real life due to natural setting (high ecological validity)
  • Less likelihood of demand characteristics affecting results as ppts. don’t know they are being studied

Cons
- Less control over extraneous variables that could change results. Makes it difficult to be replicated

Q

Case Study Eval. 2v3

A

Pros

  • Detailed qualitative data as time is focused on a person or event rather than many ppts.
  • Can investigate variables or aspects of thinking that would otherwise be unethical e.g. Couldn’t give ppt. brain damage to see effects

Cons

  • May not be generalisable as its one person or event
  • Most data is qualitative so subjective, leads to observer bias
  • Time-consuming and expensive
