Cell Division Flashcards

1
Q

What does the nucleus of a cell contain?

A

It contains chromosomes made of DNA molecules - each chromosome carries a large number of genes.

Q

What does the cell cycle involve?

A

It involves mitosis which allows for the growth, repair and asexual reproduction of cells.

6
Q

What happens in the initial growth stage?

A

Extra ribosomes, mitochondria and other sub-cellular structures are produced. The cells chromosomes are replicated so that there are two sets of the cell’s chromes.

7
Q

What happens in mitosis?

A

The two sets of chromosomes are pulled to opposite ends of the cell - then the nucleus divides into 2.

Q

What happens in the last stage of mitosis - cell division?

A

The cell divides - the cytoplasm and membranes divide to create 2 identical cells.

Q

What do stem cells in embryos do?

A

They can differentiate into most cell types, to produce all of the cell types that will make up the organism.

13
Q

What do adult stem cells in bone marrow do?

A

They can differentiate into fewer cell types than stem cells in embryos - they are used to replace dying cells and damaged tissues.

14
Q

What do plant stem cells do in the meristem tissue?

A

They can differentiate into all cell types throughout the life of the plant - this allows plants to grow for the rest of their lives.

16
Q

How can plant stem cells be used for treatment?

A

To quickly and cheaply produce cloned plants - helps protect rare plant species from extinction and create large populations of plants with special features.

17
Q

What is therapeutic cloning?

A

A process that produces an embryo with the same genes as the patient.

18
Q

How is therapeutic cloning ideal for stem cell treatment?

A

Stem cells taken from this embryo will have the same DNA as the patient - patient’s body won’t reject the stem/body cells made from the embryos stem cells.

19
Q

What is an infectious disadvantage of stem cells?

A

Stem cell transplantation could transfer viral infections.

20
Q

Why do people disagree with stem cell treatment?

A

They believe that life begins at conception - the embryo is alive - the use of embryonic stem cells is ‘killing’ an embryo.
