Q

Body lice can transmit what infections?

A

Epidemic typhus

Relapsing borrelia recurrentis fever

  • incubation 3-10 days with sudden onset fever
  • presents with 3-10 secondary fever attacks after the first onset one
  • febrile for 5 days, a febrile for 10 days, febrile for 5 days, etc.

Trench fever

  • caused by B. Quintana
  • bacteria replicate in RES cells
  • presents with severe headache sudden fever and rash/arthralgia/myalgia throughout long bones and extremities
  • 5 day intestine fever also

**associated with crowded living and poor hygiene

Q

Rickettsia prowazekii vs rickettsia typhi

A

Prowazekii

  • vectored by human lice
  • casues fatal EPIDEMIC typhus
  • more serous

Typhi

  • vectored by nay fleas
  • causes mild ENDEMIC typhus
  • *both show**
  • fever chills
  • malaise
  • rashes

rash is different from Rocky Mountain spotted fever since it spars the palms and soles and begins on the trunk and spreads outward

Q

Scabies

A

Caused by sarcoptes scabies

Embed eggs in the stratum corneum and are very pruritic
- usually between fingers and toes

Eggs take 2-3 days to hatch and nymphs can stay inside for 2 weeks until they become adult size

Q

Tinea versicolor

A

“Pityriasis”
- caused by malassezia or pityrosporum not dermatophytes

Not as pruritic, but shows hypopigmentation rather than hyperpigmentation**

under microscope the species has a “spaghetti and meatballs” appearance

Q

Sporothrix schenckii

A

“Rose gardeners disease”

16
Q

Blastomycosis

A

Primarily a lung disease but can have dermal lesions with granulomatous nodules

Endemic to northeast US

Fungi have the shape of RBCs and are the same size (just dont look red)

17
Q

Coccidiodes

A

“Valley fever”

Spherules look MUCH larger than RBCs in size

Causes granulomatous lung diseases that can disseminate into skin

  • casues erythema nodosum in skin
  • also “desert bumps”
  • rarely can cause erythema multiforme
  • also arthralgia and meningitis is possible
18
Q

Paracoccidiodes

A

“Captains wheel” shaped
- larger than RBC with smaller buds around it

Casues lung disease with granulomas that can disseminate into skin also

19
Q

Blephartis

A

Lipid filled sacs on the eyelashes or eyebrows

Casued by follicle mites of the démodé species

20
Q

Mucormycosis

A

Caused by mucormycosis or rhizomes species

Species have non-septae hyphae with wide angled branches

Very dangerous and deadly in immunocompromised and diabetic patients
