Addition and Condensation Polymerisation Flashcards

1
Q

What is addition polymerisation?

A

When the double bonds in an unsaturated monomer (alkene) are broken with pressure and a catalyst and “add together” to form a polymer

Q

What key thing happens in an addition reaction?

A

The monomers bond without the loss of any atom or molecule - only the polymer is formed

Q

What key thing happens in a condensation reaction? (2)

A
  1. For each new bond that forms, a small molecule is lost (e.g H20 or CO2)
  2. The monomers of the polymer will always keep their carbon chain and the link that forms between them (e.g. ester link, amide link)`
