Treaty of Rijswijk:

Summary

A

William entered peace talks with the French after 1696, but Louis did not offer satisfactory settlement to William and French negotiators refused to acknowledge William as the legitimate King of England.

Despite the stalling of peace talks, both sides were bankrupt by 1697.

Peace talks resumed and with both sides weary of war and the French suffering an economic crisis, a settlement was reached under the terms of the Treaty of Ryswick:

  • Peace was officially declared between France and the three powers: England, Spain and the Dutch United Provinces.
  • French agreed to abandon their claims for land in Germany and Holland
  • Louis forced to accept that William was the legitimate King of England and promised to give no assistance to James II.
  • French also made gains from the English in North America, and so the borders were returned to those that existed before 1688.
