gluconeogenesis and glucose homeostasis Flashcards

1
Q

A

the synthesis of glucose from non-carbohydrate precursors e.g. lactate, AAs [alanine], glycerol [triacylglycerols]

Q

glucose requirements

A
  • brain and red blood cells require glucose as a fuel.
  • daily requirement=160g
  • glycogen stores=190g
  • therefore glycogen stores have enough glucose to last ~ 1 day

Q

gluconeogenesis pathway

A

reversal of glycolysis except for 3 steps:

1) pyruvate to PEP
2) F1,6BP to F6P
3) G6P to glucose.

these steps are irreversible in glycolysis, so require different enzymes and energy inputs.
