OEM Ford Explorer in 2000

A

Initial Situation:
 US administration alerts Ford and Firestone due to a
high number of accidents of Ford Explorers equipped
with Firestone tyres.
 Estimated 3000 injured and 250 death casualties
Causes:
 Tread separation causes accidents: rolling over
 Production of the tyres during a strike period in the
plant at Decatur, IL.
 Modifications before SOP, among them the recommendation
to lower tyre pressure from 35 psi to 26 psi
Consequences:
 Recall of Ford, change of 14,4 Mio tyres
 Blaming each other for the failure
 End of a more than 100 year old relationship

Needs planning

What needs to be purchased?

A

Demand planning is about determining all material and services requirements to maintain and secure production for a defined period of time.

Primary needs:

  • All final products which are demanded by customers
  • Needs that are specified in sales and production planning
  • All articles of trade and spare parts

e. g. printing industry:
- papier of certain size
- printing ink, right printing data

Secondary needs:

  • Results from the primary needs
  • Σ raw material + ready mounting and assembly parts for the primary needs
  • Needs that are recalculated depending on the product & period

e. g. printing industry:
- printing plates
- water

Tertiary needs:

  • Needs for material & services that are not directly part of the final product, but which are needed to carry out the operational tasks.
  • Period-related needs and consumables

e. g. printing industry:
- oil and lubricants
- rubber blankets (for offset printing)

Additional needs (unplanned needs): all needs which are required additionally to the three types
of needs (see above). Samples for the printing industry: paper for proofs or (planned) waste

How much needs to be purchased?

  1. Required quantity:

• Gross primary needs: needs for individual results or products, starting from
the production programme.
• Net primary needs (Net-PN): needs according to possibly existing inventories
• Gross secondary needs (Gross-SN): Net-PN + necessary additional needs
• Net secondary needs: take into account existing orders & order backlogs

  1. Purchasing volume:

Gross secondary need for raw material and/or gross tertiary need for consumables which are derived from the net primary need for end products
