What is gestational diabetes melitus?
A glucose intolerance that is first recognised or starts at pregnancy.
What is a normal blood glucose reading between?
4-7 mmol/litre.
What is hyperglycaemia?
When there is a random plasma glucose of more than 11 mmol/litre.
What is hypoglycaemia?
Random plasma glucose of less than 4 mmol/litre.
What is diabetic ketoacidosis?
Results from hyperglycaemia when the body runs out of insulin, ketones start to build up in the body.
What is hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic syndrome?
Happens to people with type 2 diabetes who have extreme hyperglycemia without acidosis of ketones. May develop due to illness or dehydration
How often should patients with type 1 diabetes self-monitor their blood glucose levels?
At least 4 times a day, before each meal and before bed.
