Q

What is expected upper:lower segment ratio?

What is U:L ratio for:

1) infants
2) 10yo
3) pubertal

A

The upper-to-lower (U:L) segment ratio is an important part of the physical examination that can be used to detect subtle abnormalities of growth and development. The distance from the pubic symphysis to the floor (in a standing patient) is measured to obtain the lower segment value; this is subtracted from the patient’s height to obtain the upper segment value. The U:L ratio is then calculated using the two values.

1) 1.7 (babies have short legs!)
2) 1.0
3) 0.9
