Q

To what extent do the challenges outweigh the opportunities for water management in the UK (9)

A

agree
Challenges:
-leaching of fertilisers from farmland - open land = eutrophication e.g. Large Agribusiness Lynnford House Farm have a vast area of land + so fertilisers run off
-hot water used in cooling systems running into rivers and disrupting habitats - large scale manufacturers only look for profit - difficult to control as done in secret.
How we Can manage:
-educating palm widespread knowledge = widespread action e.g. Severn Trent water conserving shower heads and meters
-legislation - UK and EU prevent widespread factory runoff w/ hefty fines

Q

Explain how exploiting energy resources can cause environmental issues (6)

A

(intro = exponentially increasing population = greater demand)
Fossil fuels:
-C02 accelerates global warming and S02 dissolves in water to form H2S04 depleting infrastructure and marine life
Nuclear:
-releases radioactive waste – long term effect on animal health disrupting ecosystems
Renewable Energy:
-wind farms disrupt bird migration patterns leading to negative effects on stability of ecosystems with predators and prey

Q

The advantages of exploiting natural gas outweigh the disadvantages(9)

A

Agree to a full extent
Bad:
-Peru - exploitation has led to reverse becoming a highway of boats polluting water source which disrupts both the economy as fishing is main industry and the food source of ppl
-foreign developers carry disease that local indigenous Peruvians don’t have immunity to = social tension
Few advantages:
-saves Peru $4 billion in energy cost - small economic boost
-money has built an office block and market to encourage development - only just replaces jobs of fishermen
-money taken by TNC

Q

Discuss the issues arising from the Uk’s changing energy mix(6)

A

Opportunities:
-shift towards renewables creates new industries in turn employment and development e.g. Rampion Windfarm
-reduces air pollution so reduces global warming in line w/ current political agreements
Challenges:
-unemployment creates social upheaval e.g. closing down coal mines
-unreliable resources and expensive to research and set up new techniques
