Evaluative adjective
Offer judgement on a noun being described- e.g. The students work was ‘awful’
Comparative adjective
Usually ends in ‘er’ or have ‘more’ in front comparing- e.g. prettier, more stupid
Superlative adjective
Highest degree of a quality- e.g. most stupid, smartest
Adverbs of manner
Describe the way in which something is done- e.g. he kissed me ‘passionately’, I bit his lip ‘hard’
Adverbs of time
The time something happens- e.g. tomorrow, regularly
Adverbs of degree (intensifiers)
Intensify the meaning of a word- e.g. very, so
Conjunction
Connect together words or clauses- e.g. and, but
Co-ordinating conjunction
Connect together words/clauses of ‘equal’ status- e.g. I like you ‘and’ you like me
Subordinating conjunctions
Connect clauses of ‘unequal’ status- e.g. ‘If’ you eat cheese, I’ll spit on you
Determiner
Determines the kind of reference a noun or noun group has. They always come before the noun- e.g. this is ‘the’ best day of my life, ‘this’ feeling is wonderful
Demonstrative determiner
They don’t take place of a noun, they come before one- e.g. look at ‘that’ idiot
Possessive determiner
Indicate possession- e.g. this is ‘my’ food
Definite article
The name for the word ‘the’
Indefinite article
The name for the word ‘a’
Noun
Describes people, places or things- e.g. Gemma, London, Ball
