Q

What is the rationale for assigning a disease as ‘notifiable’ vs. ‘reportable’?

A

Diseases classified as ‘notifiable’ can be monitored for emergence (increase in cases, change in epi) or for trade purposes.

  • This is appropriate for diseases that may be naturally occuring but where individual cases do not require public health action.

Diseases classified as ‘reportablerequire public health interventions (e.g. prevention, control, or eradication) to safeguard human/animal health or for trade purposes.

  • This is appropriate for diseases that closely threaten humans.

Q

Who reports a confirmed TB detection to whom?

A

Any positive smear/culture/probe results must be reported to the MOH. Labs must report any positive smear + culture results by FMP to the MOH or to the First Nations + Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) MOH, as appropriate. Labs must also report to the patient’s physician and the relevant TB Clinic in Edmonton, Calgary, or the AHS TB Medical Consultant if outside Edmonton/Calgary.
