Q

Anterior Commissure

A
  • In brain (SC is anterior/ventral white commissure)
  • Separates BG into motor and reward systems
  • Below: ventral pallidum and ventral striatum

Q

CT

A
  • X-rays (high radiation)
  • Fast
  • Easy
  • Good for shape of brain, ventricles
  • 3D availability
  • White: bone, blood
  • Dark: CSF

Q

MRI Function, Types

A
  • Hydrogen nuclei that are aligned, then perturbed by magnets
  • T1: myelin is bright, ventricles (Water) is dark
    • DOES NOT SHOW LESIONS
  • T2: water is white, fat appears dark
    • Lesions & CSF appear
  • FLAIR: water is DARK, white matter is less dark, gray matter is least dark
    • Shows lesions clearly but NOT ACUTE STROKES
  • DWI: identifies acute stroke based on water movement (lesion is bright white)

Q

CT vs MRI: How to Remember

A
  • CT: thick white rim (bone + blood)
    • CSF = dark
  • T1: gray matter is darker than white matter
  • T2: gray matter is lighter than white matter
    • CSF is LIGHT
  • FLAIR: gray matter is lighter than white matter
    • CSF is dark
