What is the difference between a controlled and uncontrolled oxygen mask?
They either control how much O2 leaves the mask or they don’t
What % of O2 does a nasal cannulae supply?
24-40%
When is a nasal cannulae used?
With mild hypoxia and the not critically ill
What are the disadvantages of using a nasal cannulae?
Cant provide humidified 02 so it dries out the nose which causes bleeding and encrusting. It also delivers low flow O2
What % of O2 does a Hudson mask provide?
30-60%. It mixes O2, room and and exhaled air together
What % of O2 does a non-rebreathe mask provide?
85-90%. The patient is mixing room air with exhaled air
What type of O2 flow does a venturi mask provide?
Controlled O2
What is the definition of apnoea?
Cessation of airflow for more than 10 seconds
What is obstructive sleep apnoea?
5 or more obstructive apnoeas per hour
What is hypopnoea?
Reduction in airflow by 50% accompanied by desaturation of 4% and arousal from sleep
What are the 3 different regions of the pharynx?
The nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx
What are the clinical features of sleep apnoea?
Snoring, nocturnal chocking, restless sleep, morning dry mouth, morning headaches excessive daytime sleepiness
What is cor pulmonale?
Right heart failure
What is the Epworth sleepiness scale?
How likely are you to doze off in different situations
What is polysomnography?
A sleep study investigation
