Q

What is the difference between the social and medical model defining disability?

A

Medical - is concerned with the inability to perform day-to-day tasks or tasks with the manner that is accepted as ‘normal’. Is concerned about actual tasks and that the impairments causing this should be fixed or changed by medical and other treatments

The social model is that disability is caused by the way that society is organised rather than by a person’s impairment or difference
It is society that creates segregation and organizes people into groups

Q

Why might it be hard to access the mouth of someone with cerebral palsy?
How can you overcome this? (2 ways)

A

Muscle stiffness and weakness
They may find it hard to keep their mouth open

Can use finger guards (made of plastic) so they can bite down on the plastic but probs the mouth open enough to see in
Bite blocks - again props the occlusion open to allow access and to be able to see
