FACTORS OF AFFECTING DEVELOPMENT Flashcards
What are the 2 physical factors affecting development?
- a poor climate
- lots of natural hazard
How does poor climate affect development?
- events like droughts = ill opportunities to farm to produce food ➡ unable to make money
CONSEQUENCE:
- famine & unable to pay for medical care(hospitals) = people (/animals) dies
- soil erosion/ removal of nutrients in the soil
- country may become an LIC
How does lots of natural hazards affect development?
- with NH deaths, injuries & destroy property occurs
- reduce tourist ➡ affects the country’s level of development
CONSEQUENCE:
- money is spent endlessly having to rebuild infrastructure ( e.g: Hatiti, 2010)

- debt
How does trade affect development?
- most of the worlds trade is between richer countries
- so they export expensive manufactured goods & buy cheap primary good ➡ positive balance of trade
CONSEQUENCE:

How does debt affect development?
- many LIC’s + NEEs owe money
- greater debt = greater poverty
CONSQUENCE:
- repayments = countries have less money to spend on healthcare, education and development
What are the 2 social factors affecting development?
- education
- quality of water
How does education affect development?
- good education = improves ability to get a skilled well-paid job
CONSEQUENCE:
- attracts investment (country development) from tertiary & quaternary industry
How does quality of water affect development?
- some countries money is spent more on sourcing water than education or employment
- poor sanitation = lead to unsafe drinking water ➡ causes of diseases like cholera
CONSEQUENCE:
- this can reduce quality of life + life expectancy
