Definition of Allusion
A reference to something which is commonly known.
What are the Elements of Plot in order?
introduction, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, conclusion
Flashback
A pause in a story to describe events from the past.
Foreboding
A feeling that something bad will happen.
Foreshadowing
Writer gives a reader a hint or clue at what’s to come.
What does Dramatic Irony mean?
Events that are unknown to the character, but is known to the reader or audience.
What is a Metaphor?
A figure of speech using comparisons of seemingly unlike things, suggesting a similarity
What is Personification?
A figure of speech in which an author describes concepts, animals, or inanimate objects and giving them human attributes or emotions.
What is a Simile?
A figure of speech in which two things are compared using the words “like, as, or than”.
What is a Theme?
It is the central message/universal truth presented by a literary work.
What are the types of characters? (Hint: Dynamic, ____..)

What are the types of narration/point of view?
first person, second person, third person, third person omniscient, third person limited omniscient
What are the 5 main types of conflict?

Definition of Situational Irony
Events that turn out to be the opposite of what is expected
Definition of Verbal Irony
The words literally state the opposite of the writer’s true meaning
Definition of a Dynamic Character
A character that changes in response to the action of the narrative
Definition of a Round Character
A character with many traits
Definition of a Static Character
A character who does not change, or changes in a superficial or temporary way.
Definition of a Flat Character
A character with fewer traits or a plain personality.
Definition of a Protagonist
The central character.
Definition of a Antagonist
The adversary of the central character.
Definition of First Person
Told from the point of view of a character, using pronouns like I, Me, My, Us, Our, etc.
Definition of Second Person
A point of view where the narrator tells the story directly to the reader, using pronouns like you, your, and yours.
Definition of Third Person Limited Omniscient
The narrator has knowledge of the thoughts/feelings of only 1 or 2 characters.
